Wieviele Farben gibt es? Und was passiert, wenn wir sie alle gleichzeitig oder einzeln und nacheinander sehen? So etwa lauten die Fragen, denen Johannes Franzen in seinen meist großformatigen Bildern und Filmen von vibrierender Farbigkeit mit mathematischer Genauigkeit nachspürt. Die erste Frage ist mit 16.777.216 zumindest gegenwärtig sehr genau beantwortet. Dies ist die Zahl der digitalen Farben basierend auf dem RGB-Farbraum. Jedes x-beliebige digitale Foto ist eine Kombination aus einer willkürlichen Anzahl dieser Farben. Damit geht die durchaus verblüffende Erkenntnis einher, dass die Zahl aller möglichen Digitalaufnahmen endlich ist. Auch diesen Beweis tritt Johannes Franzen an. Er macht mit seinen neuen Arbeiten die Komplexität digitaler Fotografie sichtbar, deckt dabei gleichzeitig ihre Begrenztheit auf und gewährt dem Betrachter Einblicke in die DNA der digitalen Bilder von großer ästhetischer Kraft.

Johannes Franzen – The finite digital

How many colors are there? And what happens if we see them all at the same time, or each one after the other? These are the kind of questions Johannes Franzen explores with mathematic precision in his vibrantly colorful, usually large-format pictures and films. The answer to the first question is, at least for the present, 16,777,216. That exactly is the number of digital colors based on the RGB color model. Any and every digital photo is but a combination of an arbitrary number of these colors – a simple fact which leads to the quite stunning realization that the number of all possible digital photographs in the universe is a finite one. And Johannes Franzen is there to prove it. In his new works he displays the complexity of digital photography and uncovers its limitation at the same time. His insights into the DNA of digital images exert great aesthetic power on the viewer.
